This tour is for those who wish to ride the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway (WVSB) at a leisurely pace so that they can stop visit the local communities along the way. This is an easy ride - the daily mileage averages 40 miles a day and there are only a couple of hills and they are only 500' climbs. The pace is relaxed so that it give you a chance to stop and enjoy the points of interest along the way.
The Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway is Oregon's first designated bikeway. The 132-mile route features sites important to Oregon's history. The route takes the rider through farmland that grows some of the most diverse crops in the world. Our tour follows the marked route with a few side trips for our overnight accommodations.
On Friday morning we start our tour at Champoeg State Park as this is the official start of the WVSB. We ride among the farms that line the banks of the Willamette River until we get to Willamette Mission State Park where we make a short stop. We keep following the river on into Salem where we ride right along the waterfront as we pass through town. Just south of town we ride into a vineyard where we will be staying for the night. Wine tasting and a nice dinner in the vineyard is sure to follow.
On Saturday morning we follow the Willamette River as it meanders back and forth through the valley. We turn east for an while and follow the Santiam River for a while as we ride into the small town of Jefferson. We continue on and catch back up with the Willamette River in Albany. We follow the river in to Corvallis where we will camp and the fairgrounds.
On Sunday morning we again follow a meandering Willamette River for a while before we head east across the valley to stop by the Thompson's Mill Heritage Site. It is the oldest water-powered grain mill in the state. Pioneer families came here with their grain crops and left with the flour that would keep them through the coming year. We ride out through Brownsville before head back to the west to meet up with the Willamette River again in Harrisburg where we will stay for the night.
Monday's ride starts out with a quiet ride along the Willamette River. We ride into the town of Coburg and on to Armitage Park on he McKenzie River. This the the official end to the WVSB but we are just going to take a break here. Eugene has a very good reputation for the bike trails that crisscross the city so we are going to ride on in to Eugene. At our finish here in Eugene we will get cleaned up before our ride back to Portland.
